The production of the tube-based U 47 microphone came to an end in 1965. Four years later, with the VF14 tube no longer available, Neumann developers tried to recapture the sound æsthetic of the U 47 using transistors. The result was the U 47 fet (field effect transistor), which had the same K47/49 capsule as the U 47, and continued in production until 1968. Controversy over the relative merits of tubes and transistors still rages. Georg Neumann’s attitude was unambiguous: “Don’t try to bend the laws of physics in pursuit of a particular sound. If people want the sound of the U 47, it’s up to them to try to get hold of one.”¹

Im Jahr 1969 — die VF14-Röhre ist längst nicht mehr erhältlich — versuchen die Neumann-Entwickler mit Transistoren an die Klangäs­thetik und den Erfolg des U 47 anzuknüpfen und entwickeln das U 47 fet. Es besitzt die gleiche Kapsel K47/49 und wird bis 1986 gebaut, kann sich aber nicht wirklich an den Erfolg des Vorgängers anknüpfen. Bis heute hält die Diskussion über Röhre oder Transistor an. Georg Neumann selbst hatte dazu eine klare Meinung, wie sich der damalige Mitarbeiter Ernst Weiß erinnert: „Ich kann mich erinnern, dass der Chef gesagt hat, man solle nicht die Physik verbiegen, um irgendeinen Klang zu erzeugen. ,Wenn die Leute den U-47-Klang haben wollen, dann müssen sie eben sehen, dass sie eines kriegen,‘ sagte Georg Neumann.“²
