The Collins 831D-1—Thus far this is the only photograph of the Collins transmitter (seen at left) that I have been able to locate. The perpetual annual engineering trophy is in the foreground. Behind it is the stereophonic Master Control console fashioned from two VU meters and a pair of 2 dB per step attenuators, which were fed by the Gates Stereo Statesman console across the hall in Studio A. The reason this arrangement existed in master control was to be able to switch from studio to studio. If you look closely, behind the base of the trophy is a home brew switcher made from an old telephone type selector system. There were two rows of switches. The top row was the left channel and the bottom row was the right channel. You could select from Studio A, Studio B (which was, at the time, the TV studio audio board), or Studio C. Studios D and E were not on this switcher because the switcher had been replaced by the time those studio were added in late 1973 or early 1974. Photo courtesy of Gary Johnson.
